The Machines
Since they exist in wide use, photo cameras are divided into two groups: compacts and SLRs.
SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex which is pretty much the type that professionals use.
Compacts are often easy to use and quick to take the shots (there were a lot less of them in the analogue-era). Compact machines are common, they are barely noticable, since today almost everyone has a little camera in their backpacks - if nothing else, then in their mobile phones.
For SLR cameras this is a bit different. First of all SLRs in most cases they require you to set everything up on the camera to take the picture properly. This sometimes requires great patience from the subjects and clear thoughts from the photographer so the pictue is taken properly. Also SLRs - due to their mechanism - are much bigger than compacts. This causes most eyes to gather onto you once you swing around your SLR machine declaring: "I'm here to take pictures".
But do not be alarmed. This is normal, people are used to photographers all around the world as they've been around for more than 170 years now. Although I do recommend everyone to keep a low profile a little. It is not a good idea to offend people by taking their full-frontal pictures without their permissions!
